Last week’s heat and dry weather was bad news for firefighters all over the west. It was also bad news for farmers! We were watering daily to keep our plants healthy, but it paid off! The heat was a boost for the tomatoes, squash, and cucumbers, which all set fruit last week. It also finally coaxed the last watermelon plant from its seed.
With the rain over the last two days, we’ve cooled off and deeply watered the containers. Plus, we managed to capture some of the rainwater to use for watering later on. I was watching the radar maps anxiously, waiting to see whether the rain would come our way. It appears we may get more this weekend, as well. While the rain is no fun to be caught in (especially when you parked far away to get more exercise), it is a beautiful sight as it ripples the leaves and drips gently into the soil.
